The Unusual Story Behind a 1990 NBA Hoops Trading Card

1 week ago 0

Collecting sports memorabilia often yields surprising outcomes. You might handle a seemingly ordinary trading card and discover unexpected details. Such is the case with a 1990-91 NBA Hoops card featuring former New York Knicks point guard, later Golden State Warriors head coach, Mark Jackson.

This card has gained notoriety after keen collectors noticed Lyle and Erik Menendez, convicted murderers, sitting in floor seats during the pictured game. The Menendez brothers, known for the first-degree murder of their parents, appear in the background from a Knicks versus Los Angeles Clippers game.

Remarkably, the photograph was taken after the brothers committed their crimes, with reports suggesting they purchased the seats using proceeds from a life insurance policy.

Sports business analyst and memorabilia collector Darren Rovell owns one of these cards. He showcased it on “The Craig Carton Show” alongside host Craig Carton.

This is one of my favorite Knicks items, Rovell stated while displaying the framed card.Read the top of the slab.

The card reads Valid: Menendez brothers sit courtside, highlighting their presence in the background post-murder.

Carton expressed disbelief upon learning this story, initially unfamiliar with the legend surrounding the “Mark Jackson/Menendez” card. Rovell elaborated, noting the incredible timing of the photograph and the events surrounding it.

Both Lyle and Erik Menendez are serving sentences of 50 years to life. They are seeking parole again after being denied in 2025, with a hearing scheduled for March 2027.

The takeaway: keep collecting sports memorabilia. You might find unexpected figures in the backdrop of a trading card.
