On September 20, 2026, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the testing of a new hypersonic weapon at an undisclosed site. His teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, was present during the event. North Korean state media highlighted the new weapon as an ‘irresistible force,’ posing significant challenges for adversaries.
The state-run KCNA news agency described the tested weapon as ‘of great significance.’ Though reports did not specify the weapon type, images showed Kim with his daughter examining a screen labeled, ‘Hwasongpho-11Ma-1 flight trajectory.’ This title suggests an upgraded short-range ballistic missile with a hypersonic glide vehicle enhancement.
Analysts believe hypersonic weapons like these can fly lower and faster than standard rockets, complicating interception attempts. Since 2021, North Korea has tested multiple hypersonic systems. Kim Jong Un aims to advance his nation’s nuclear potential with such weaponry developments.
This missile test complicates the efforts of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. He plans to propose new strategies for engaging North Korea at the U.N. General Assembly. The Korean conflict technically remains unresolved since a ceasefire in 1953, rather than a complete peace agreement.
Lee suggests a new diplomatic approach, proposing that South Korea drop demands for North Korea to relinquish nuclear arms. Instead, he suggests a temporary suspension on further nuclear tests or developments. President Trump has indicated a willingness to meet Kim, possibly at an upcoming APEC summit in Shenzhen, China. The White House has indicated openness to talks without preconditions.
Trump met Kim three times during his prior term without achieving denuclearization progress. North Korea has advanced its nuclear and conventional armaments, reportedly possessing a significant nuclear arsenal. South Korea estimates Pyongyang has between 80 and 120 nuclear warheads, whereas Trump reported a number of 57.
No signs of interest from Kim’s regime in resuming dialogues with Trump or Lee have emerged. Last month, Trump described scaling back annual military exercises with South Korea as a measure to reduce perceived hostility toward Pyongyang.
