Suspected Poisoning Causes Deaths of Ten Lions in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area

1 week ago 0

Ten lions were discovered dead in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania, a location recognized by UNESCO. Officials suspect poisoning as the cause of death.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) issued a statement reporting the deaths on September 18, 2026, in the Ndutu area of the reserve. Preliminary investigations indicate the lions consumed poison. Authorities are conducting a detailed investigation to confirm the cause and identify the culprits.

Ngorongoro has long experienced tensions between local nomadic communities and the government. Conflicts have previously erupted following the government’s eviction program initiated in 2022. The Tanzanian government claims that the increasing human population, which has grown from 8,000 in 1959 to over 100,000 today, threatens wildlife habitats.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, according to UNESCO, hosts about 25,000 large animals, including a significant number of lions. These creatures are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Lion populations are declining due to various factors such as habitat loss, reduced prey, and human-wildlife conflicts.

Similar incidents have occurred in neighboring Kenya. Since June, around 20 elephants have died in the Amboseli ecosystem from suspected pesticide poisoning. The cause, whether accidental or deliberate, remains unclear. These deaths represent the first large-scale loss of elephants in this region in decades, as reported by BBC News.
