Life-Changing Wins in the College Podcast Challenge

7 days ago 0

The NPR College Podcast Challenge has been a pivotal moment for many participants, offering unique career paths and personal growth. In the height of the pandemic, a call from NPR education reporter Sequoia Carrillo changed my life, as winning the 2021 challenge led to my first job in radio at KNKX in Seattle. Currently, I am a freelance journalist working with LAist and NPR, reporting stories from various locations and meeting unforgettable people.

Reflecting on this transformative experience, I reached out to other past participants whose lives were similarly impacted by the contest.

Reconnecting with Family

Miriam Colvin, a freshman at Penn State University in 2021, was one of the winners of the inaugural challenge. Her podcast explored family lore about a boxing match involving Muhammad Ali, which encouraged her to pursue comedy and playwriting. Colvin finds inspiration in her grandparents’ stories, recognizing parts of herself as she matures. These narratives have sparked a desire to live adventurously with loved ones.

Similarly, Bunmi Omisore faced the challenge of understanding her family stories. Her podcast, which earned an honorable mention in 2025, documented her journey to learn Yoruba. The process, including her father’s commitment to speak only Yoruba with her, resulted in a deeper connection with her Nigerian heritage. Understanding language has allowed Omisore to appreciate her grandmother’s humor and personality.

A Step Closer to a Dream Career

Bennett Cook’s entry in the 2021 challenge focused on subway trains’ rare musical sounds. Being a finalist motivated him to follow his passion for transit as a career. Now working with the Chicago Transit Authority, Cook aims to operate trains and innovate transit systems.

Jo Strogatz’s win in 2024 led her to a role at Radiolab, a position she attributes to the contest. Her podcast included personal music and an interview with a friend lacking romantic experiences. Grateful for this opportunity, Strogatz enjoys combining science and storytelling daily.
