Senator Tillis Defends Policy Differences
Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, has voiced that disagreement with President Donald Trump should not be seen as disloyalty. He criticized the excessive focus on loyalty to Trump by some White House officials and emphasized the importance of accepting policy differences within the party.
Rejecting ‘Loyalty Test’
Tillis expressed his stance to reporters, stating, “I’ve supported the president more than 90 percent of the time on votes that matter.” He encouraged other members to express their disagreements openly. Tillis criticized the perceived culture of conformity around Trump, asserting his role as serving the voters of North Carolina.
The senator noted Republicans may need distance from the White House on specific issues if their disagreement is genuine. He referenced the war with Iran as an example where Republicans might have sincere policy differences.
Increasing Public Clashes
These remarks follow months of public disputes between Tillis and the Trump administration. In July, Tillis criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and voiced concerns over his handling of the Iran war, calling Hegseth’s leadership into question.
Trump defended Hegseth, contrasting Tillis’s lack of confidence in him. Tillis previously warned against impulsive decisions and expressed discontent with the handling of the Pentagon.
Political Rifts With Trump
Earlier, Trump labeled Tillis a “RINO” after the senator opposed an anti-weaponization fund linked to a legal settlement. Tillis countered by stating, “If opposing these things makes me a RINO, then I gladly accept that nickname.” He criticized the administration’s approach, particularly regarding the Iran war, alongside other Republicans.
Tillis’s disagreements extend to criticism of Trump’s inner circle over various issues, including the nomination of Todd Blanche as U.S. attorney general and the investigation of Jerome Powell. His opposition has marked him as one of the Senate’s more independent voices.
Free from Political Pressure
Having announced he will not seek reelection in 2026, Tillis has been increasingly vocal in challenging administration policies and personnel decisions. He suggested that Republicans should prioritize truthfulness with the president over blind loyalty, framing it as the ultimate act of loyalty.
