Angie Nixon, the Democratic Senate candidate from Florida, suggests reconsidering the construction of new artificial intelligence data centers due to concerns about their impact. In a humorous remark, Nixon proposed that such centers be built at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate if companies insist on proceeding.
Nixon, a state representative who recently triumphed in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary, spoke to Newsweek about the need for increased scrutiny on these expanding facilities. She cited worries about their effects on electricity costs, water supplies, and environmental issues. “I think there needs to be a moratorium until more research is done,” Nixon stated. “Or if people want to build a data center, they should put it on Mar-a-Lago.”
As the AI industry grows, data center proposals are rising nationwide, sparking opposition from communities concerned about their impact. Bipartisan opposition has surfaced in various states, with both Republican- and Democratic-led areas proposing measures to address these issues. Despite this, Trump has dismissed the concerns, labeling backlash as a “hoax.”
Nixon clarified that she supports technological innovation but advocates for stringent regulations regarding privacy, employment, and construction of data centers. She suggests a model similar to Alaska’s resource revenue distribution to financially benefit communities affected by data centers. Illinois and New York have also proposed such benefits for communities near large data centers.
Nixon’s campaign aims to challenge the Republican dominance in Florida, a state Trump won by a significant margin in 2024. Nixon faces a tough battle, with the Cook Political Report rating the Florida Senate race as Solid Republican. While polling shows varying results, Nixon believes economic dissatisfaction could help her gain support.
Polling Results
A tie with Republican Senator Ashley Moody was reported by a St. Pete Polls survey conducted in September, with other surveys offering mixed results. Recent votes in lower-turnout contests show Florida voters crossing traditional partisan lines.
Nationally, Democrats hold an advantage as shown in a Reuters/Ipsos poll, yet Republicans maintain a strong position with a Senate majority. A Nixon victory in Florida would be a significant Democratic win, suggesting the state remains competitive.
Challenges and Partisan Criticism
Nixon faces scrutiny over her Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) membership, given Florida’s large Latin American community wary of socialism. Moody has emphasized Nixon’s affiliation, though Nixon rejects the socialist label and supports universal healthcare, public education, and affordable housing.
Nixon calls for more support from national Democrats, criticizing both major parties for aligning with wealthy interest groups. Despite challenges, she receives backing from prominent Democratic figures such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
Focus on Economic Policy
Nixon argues that affordability is central to her campaign, identifying universal healthcare, tariff repeal, and universal childcare as key policies to lower household expenses. She aims to reach Florida voters through these economic proposals.
Nixon also expresses progressive views on foreign policy, opposing current funding to Israel and advocating for peace efforts. Despite criticism, she remains committed to her stance while aiming for economic benefits for Floridians.
