A devastating event unfolded in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, involving the tragic death of Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric doctor, and the critical injury of his wife. The Allegheny County Police Department reported that the attack occurred early Thursday morning when a man allegedly entered their home and assaulted the couple as they slept.
Dr. Evans, aged 46, was fatally stabbed, while his wife remains in critical yet stable condition. The police received an emergency call reporting the incident in the 100 block of Linden Avenue at 12:31 a.m. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the couple suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Dr. Evans was employed at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he served as a pediatric critical care physician. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway from Pittsburgh, allegedly intruded into the home and attacked the couple during their sleep. Witness interviews helped detectives identify Hemingway as the suspect.
According to court documents, Evans’s wife recounted waking up to the attack, during which the assailant—wearing only underwear—murmured about ‘being God.’ She quickly instructed their children, aged 8 and 12, to escape to a neighbor’s house. It was noted that Dr. Evans referred to the attacker as ‘Elijah,’ suggesting he knew him. However, the woman stated she was unfamiliar with Hemingway.
‘We do not know if there was any pre-existing relationship,’ stated Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph. ‘The woman did not know this male. We are trying to determine if the two males knew each other.’
A Monroeville Police Department K-9 unit found Hemingway nearby with hand lacerations. He remains hospitalized, awaiting transfer to the Allegheny County Jail. Hemingway faces charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass. A motive for the attack and any possible acquaintance between Hemingway and Evans is still under investigation.
Dr. Evans held the position of medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and was an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His contributions to the medical community were highly valued.
A statement from UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh expressed profound sadness at the loss. Dr. Evans was remembered as a committed caregiver and treasured community member. Thoughts and condolences were extended to his family, friends, and colleagues, alongside a request to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to unravel the details surrounding this tragic incident.
