The USC Trojans have suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game following a dangerous late hit on Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. The incident occurred during the second quarter of Oregon’s 41-20 victory over USC.
Moore was attempting to slide after securing a first down, when Stephens targeted his head with a late hit. As a result, Stephens was ejected for targeting. Moore’s teammates reacted strongly, and he was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher.
USC publicized Stephens’ suspension on Sunday. Head coach Lincoln Riley stated, “Desman’s actions in last night’s game are unacceptable and do not reflect USC Football or his character. He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences, and will learn from this.” Riley offered best wishes to Moore and his family for a full recovery.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game,” Stephens expressed. “Seeing a player injured is serious, and my reaction was completely inappropriate. I am deeply sorry to Dante, his family, and everyone who witnessed my behavior. It is not representative of USC or our program. I hope he makes a full recovery.”
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning described the hit as “disgusting.” The emotion was shared by Oregon’s wide receiver Evan Stewart, who checked on Moore as he was taken off the field.
As a consequence of his actions, Stephens will not participate in USC’s upcoming game against Washington.
