4 days ago 0

The Houston Astros dominated the Chicago White Sox in their regular-season encounters. As they face off in the American League wild-card series, the Sox aim for improved outcomes. This best-of-three series commences on Tuesday at Daikin Park in Houston.

Sox manager Will Venable expressed optimism, acknowledging the strength of the Astros. “Excited about it,” Venable commented, noting their challenging lineup, featuring Yordan Alvarez, and their strong pitching roster. Venable added, “Played them recently, had our challenges with them, so we understand how good a team they are, but we’re excited.”

The Astros secured the AL West title after concluding their season with a 9-0 win over the Athletics in West Sacramento, California. They edged out the Texas Rangers, who lost 6-4 to the Minnesota Twins, thereby officially clinching the division.

The White Sox wrapped up their regular season with a 4-2 victory against the Colorado Rockies at Rate Field, witnessed by 29,767 fans. Contributions from Randal Grichuk and Brenton Doyle, each hitting two-run home runs, paired with starting pitcher Anthony Kay, who gave up one run over five innings, marked their season finish at 84-78.

Venable praised Kay, saying, “Anthony was great today.” Kay’s changeup proved effective, eliciting numerous swing-and-miss reactions, contributing to his success in the game.

“The ultimate goal of playing this game is to get in the playoffs,” Grichuk stated. “So the fact is, now we’re in and everything starts fresh, so it’s one of those things that the past doesn’t matter. It’s what are you doing for me now, and what are you going to do for me in the playoffs?”

The Sox, finishing as the No. 6 seed after a tough loss to the Rockies, now head to Houston for the series. Game 1 and Game 2 begin at 4 p.m. and will air on Peacock and NBCSN.

In regular-season matchups, the White Sox struggled against the Astros, with a 2-5 record, including losing a series in Houston at the end of August. Grichuk commented on the team’s overall outlook stating that despite past challenges, they are optimistic about their prospects.

Notable performances included Munetaka Murakami’s outstanding day on July 26 at Rate Field against the Astros, where he hit two homers and drove in six runs during the Sox’s 12-3 victory.

The Sox were able to limit the impact of AL MVP candidate Alvarez, who had a .200 average, no home runs, and one RBI in seven games.

Venable mentioned that they are in the process of finalizing their pitching strategy as they prepare for the series, pending more details from the Astros regarding their pitching lineup.

Reflecting on their turnaround, the Sox improved significantly from the previous season (60-102), achieving this year’s total wins of 84, marking a record for any team following three consecutive 100-loss seasons.

According to Kay, the team’s success came unexpectedly, “I think we had a vision and we executed it. But I don’t think anyone saw the kind of success that we had, and I think it was really fun to be a part of. Hopefully we can continue it as long as possible.”

Preparing for their clash against the Astros, the Sox remain focused on starting afresh in the playoffs, as Grichuk concluded, “We don’t look at it as a season series record and how we played against them in the past.”

For attendance, the Sox concluded 2026 with a home season attendance of 1,986,419, marking the largest since 2022 and the second-largest in the past 15 years.
