As Spokane, Washington faced the aftermath of devastating wildfires, daily activities like school routines and even a football loss have offered comfort to students and residents who faced severe losses.
Weeks after portions of Spokane were reduced to ash, the Shadle Park High School cheerleaders performed at a football game on September 10. The sense of normalcy provided relief amid the destruction.
Dailon Wells-Dutton’s Experience
Dailon Wells-Dutton, a 17-year-old affected by the wildfire, woke up in a space that felt unfamiliar. Due to the fire’s destruction of their neighborhood, he and his family had to adjust to temporary living arrangements.
His mother attempted to recreate a sense of home by trying to replace lost items like philosophy books and family photos. Despite her efforts, much was irreplaceable. His closet held few clothes, and a new teddy bear replaced his cherished, aged one, which he had kept since the age of three.
