Steve Doocy Interviews Viral Comedian Matt Rife
Steve Doocy of Fox News recently interviewed comedian Matt Rife during his latest tour stop. The discussion centered on how viral social media clips have significantly impacted Rife’s career, his personal faith, and experiences performing for large audiences.
The Role of Social Media in Comedy
During a segment on “Fox & Friends,” Rife highlighted how platforms like TikTok have reshaped the way comedians enter the entertainment industry. He explained that posting crowd work clips on TikTok achieved more than the traditional Hollywood stand-up route.
Rife recounted his move from Ohio to Los Angeles, believing he would become a regular at renowned comedy clubs like the Laugh Factory and Comedy Store. He aimed for TV appearances and sitcom roles. However, early success with MTV’s “Wild ‘N Out” waned, leading him to what he described as “professional rock bottom.” Social media unexpectedly turned his fortunes around.
He shared that prior to his social media fame, he earned between $40,000 and $60,000 annually, according to Los Angeles County Development Authority’s standards, categorizing him as “very low income.” This was before discovering TikTok.
TikTok’s Impact on Rife’s Career
Despite initially disliking TikTok, Rife amassed over 20.3 million followers on the platform, transforming his financial situation. His reported net worth now ranges between $40-50 million.
Rife described the reach of TikTok as unparalleled. The recognition gained from the platform has led to his upcoming role alongside Owen Wilson in “Rolling Loud: The Movie,” releasing on October 2.
Rife expressed admiration for Owen Wilson, calling him a comedic genius. Working with Wilson offered invaluable learning opportunities, marking another milestone in Rife’s evolving career.
