Big Wins and Insights from Catholic League
Three pivotal Catholic League matchups reshaped views on playoff contenders. Concurrently, developments laid the groundwork for a much-anticipated showdown in the South Suburban Red conference.
Oak Lawn Prepares for a Historic Rivalry Game
Anticipation builds in Oak Lawn for its crosstown rivalry game. The Spartans narrowly avoided an upset against Evergreen Park, trailing 14-6 late in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Danny Strelow amassed 162 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Jayden Schlosser contributed 111 yards and a touchdown, leading Oak Lawn to a 21-14 overtime victory.
The Spartans face a decisive test against Richards this Friday. Although Oak Lawn’s football team hasn’t historically matched Richards, the rivalry is undeniable. The Bulldogs boast a 28-1 record over 30 seasons, with Oak Lawn’s single victory in 2008. Last year, despite entering the matchup at 6-0, Oak Lawn fell 59-29. But this year feels different, and they have a solid chance.
Richards (4-2) improved weekly, securing four consecutive wins. Senior Eric Jacobs has excelled at quarterback, scoring in varied ways last week in a 35-6 win over Eisenhower. This rivalry brings fresh excitement, with time proving if the Spartans can shift their fortunes.
Providence and St. Rita Undermine Champions
Friday night victories by Providence and St. Rita over defending state champions shook the standings. Providence (5-1) narrowly defeated Class 6A champion Fenwick 28-21. Junior quarterback Dominic Vita rebounded from a challenging previous game, impacting both through the air and on the ground efficiently. With a match against Mount Carmel looming, Providence’s status as a title contender in Class 5A is affirmed.
St. Rita experienced ups and downs in a grueling schedule, recovering from a surprising 42-16 defeat to St. Ignatius in Week 5. They battled back, narrowly overcoming Class 4A champion Montini 39-38, propelled by standout performances from senior running back Brandon Johnson Jr. and senior quarterback John Fennell.
Brother Rice’s Shocking Triumph
Brother Rice’s victory over Mount Carmel, with a 35-24 scoreline, was eye-opening. Freshman quarterback Sam Holcomb impressed, with crucial plays in the fourth quarter. Senior receiver Anthony Cartolano praised Holcomb’s performance as exceptional, lauding his tenacity and skill.
“Sam is amazing,” Cartolano said. “He’s an amazing player and athlete. Plays with aggression all the time. It’s great to have him on our team. He’s the best QB I’ve ever played with.”
Holcomb’s growth boosts Brother Rice’s prospects for repeating as Class 7A champions, overshadowing challenges from teams like East St. Louis.
