Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed a recent cockpit attack on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. In an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu detailed the event and praised passengers for their bravery in confronting the attacker. Yaniv Chayon, who entered the cockpit to subdue the suspect, received particular commendation.
“This incident could have escalated into a catastrophe,” Netanyahu stated. He emphasized the harrowing situation, saying passengers had already begun praying, fearing the worst. Chayon’s prompt intervention was vital in preventing a disaster comparable to the 9/11 attacks, which resulted in nearly 3,000 casualties.
Aboard the FlyDubai flight, a pilot allegedly attacked a colleague and attempted to crash the plane, with over 100 individuals onboard. The injured captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling passengers to gain access and control the situation.
Upon meeting Chayon, Netanyahu applauded his courage. Chayon was modest about his actions, stating, “I just had to do it.” Netanyahu highlighted the importance of Chayon’s actions in saving the lives of 174 passengers, most of whom were Israeli citizens.
Netanyahu attributed the attack to antisemitism, remarking on the deep-rooted hatred that can lead individuals to such fanatical actions. The prime minister noted that the attacker intended to cause significant harm to the passengers, driven by extremist ideologies.
During the crisis, the aircraft descended rapidly from 30,000 feet to 17,000 feet within a minute, requiring an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Other pilots aboard took over and successfully landed the plane in Tabuk. Captain Smit Machchhar, injured in the attack, is currently battling for his life.
The attacker, identified as an Omani national, was detained following the emergency landing. FlyDubai announced that flights to and from Israel would be suspended as authorities continue the investigation. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and researchers are exploring whether the co-pilot acted independently.
Netanyahu concluded with a note on the importance of vigilance and preparedness in thwarting terrorist actions, implying trust in Israeli passengers during such emergencies.
