Alec Bohm’s two-out home run in the 10th inning gave the Philadelphia Phillies a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. This win forced a decisive third game in their National League wild-card series.
Philadelphia made a comeback in the seventh with solo home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. They had been trailing 3-1. Harper’s home run compensated for an earlier fielding error he made.
Andrew Painter, a regular-season starter, helped secure the win for the Phillies bullpen. He pitched three scoreless innings, leaving two runners on base in the 10th by striking out Dominic Smith. His strikeout came after a successful challenge of a called ball, confirmed by the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system.
The game used traditional extra-inning rules without the runner on second base. Alec Bohm’s home run, a 357-foot shot to right field, was off Atlanta’s Didier Fuentes. The Phillies will face the Braves in Game 3, having previously defeated Atlanta in past playoff series.
In the seventh inning, Sean Murphy’s score for Atlanta came after Drake Baldwin’s double off Harper’s glove. Harper, newly returned to the outfield, misjudged Baldwin’s drive. Matt Olson’s sacrifice fly added another run for the Braves.
Late in the eighth, Schwarber and Harper both hit home runs against Dylan Lee, the Braves’ starting pitcher for their previous win. Schwarber’s home run traveled 447 feet, while Harper’s went 418 feet.
Tyler Mahle pitched seven innings for the Braves, allowing one run. Cristopher Sánchez pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Phillies, giving up three runs while throwing 116 pitches.
In the 10th inning, Painter allowed a single to Mauricio Dubón and a bloop single to Michael Harris II. He struck out Austin Riley and ended the game with a challenge-confirmed strike to Smith.
Earlier, Harper’s attempt to catch Baldwin’s fly ball failed, allowing a run. Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. demonstrated aggressive baserunning early in the game, walking, stealing second and third, before scoring on Olson’s single.
Edmundo Sosa left the game after suffering an apparent leg injury in the ninth inning. Derek Hill replaced him as a pinch runner.
Looking ahead to Game 3, the Braves might start or rely heavily on RHP Grant Holmes, who has a 10-6 record. The Phillies are expected to start RHP Aaron Nola, holding a 7-12 record.
