Ukraine’s military has transformed armored personnel carriers (APCs) into improvised explosive devices to make strategic breakthroughs in the Donetsk oblast. Third Army Corps commander Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky announced that these innovations have been crucial in recent operations.
Converted Armored Personnel Carriers
To penetrate enemy defenses, Soviet BTR-60s have been adapted into robotic kamikaze vehicles. These APCs have aided in Ukraine’s progress in the Lyman sector during a counteroffensive, particularly in the use of unmanned vehicles and drones.
The Strategy Behind Operation Vivaldi
Code-named Operation Vivaldi, this offensive has prevented Russian forces from capturing Ukraine’s critical fortified cities, known as the “Fortress Belt.” These cities are vital for retaining control of the Donbas region. The operation has involved tactical maneuvers to outwit Russian defenses.
During the operation, Ukrainian troops staged a feint from Shandryholove towards Zelena Dolyna, misleading Russian forces about their true objective at Nove. This tactic forced Russian troops to deplete their reserves, missing Ukraine’s primary strike on Nove. The converted BTR-60s played a key role in demolishing the enemy’s strong defenses.
Successful Territory Gains
Commander Biletsky noted the liberation of 19 square miles during the third phase of the operation, contributing to a total recapture of 67 square miles. Ukraine’s success was aided by strict operational security and effective counter-drone measures, which diminished Russian forces’ situational awareness.
Reactions and Analysis
Despite these achievements, Russian military bloggers have downplayed Operation Vivaldi. They claim that Russian forces have maintained their positions, contradicting reports from Ukrainian military observers and analysts.
The Institute for the Study of War reports that Ukrainian forces now control both Nove and Shandryholove, with the nearest Russian positions significantly distanced.
