Debate Urged in Texas Senate Race as Paxton Faces Criticism

Paxton and Talarico Face Pressure to Debate

Republican strategist Karl Rove raised doubts about whether Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will engage in a debate with Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. He expressed concern that avoiding a direct confrontation could jeopardize Paxton’s chances in the upcoming election.

Speaking at the Economic Club of Chicago, Rove emphasized the importance of a debate for Paxton in winning what is considered a closely watched Senate race. Rove stated, “If he doesn’t debate, I think he loses.” He questioned Paxton’s ability to be aggressive in a debate.

Paxton has faced criticism for reportedly declining several debate opportunities, including a CNN invitation. Meanwhile, Talarico has publicly challenged Paxton to a debate on Fox News, which the network has agreed to host if both candidates participate. Paxton advisor Nick Maddux indicated willingness for a debate, yet none have been scheduled.

Polling Numbers Indicate a Tight Race

Recent polling data shows a competitive race between Paxton and Talarico. A PollsMax average reported Talarico leading by a narrow margin of 0.2 percentage points. Variations exist in other surveys, ranging from a slight Democratic lead to a Republican advantage.

A Fox News poll revealed Talarico holds a net positive personal rating, with Paxton’s ratings less favorable. A separate poll from the Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center showed Talarico leading Paxton with 47 percent to 46 percent support among likely Texas voters.

Rove Criticizes Paxton’s Nomination

Karl Rove has intensified his criticism of Paxton, suggesting that the Republican would be in a stronger position if John Cornyn had been nominated instead. He argued that Paxton’s political baggage complicates the Senate race.

Rove discussed internally with Republicans about concerns regarding their party’s standing in the election. These concerns arise amid Paxton’s decision not to commit to debating Talarico.

Trump Comments on Paxton

During a rally, President Donald Trump made light-hearted remarks about Paxton, calling him “a pain in the ass” while recalling his support after the 2020 election. Despite the humor, Trump endorsed Paxton as the “greatest attorney general in the United States.”

Texas Midterm Voting Schedule

Early voting in Texas starts October 19 and ends October 30, while the official Election Day is set for November 3. The final weeks will be crucial, with possible negative advertising impacting the race dynamics.

Talarico is concentrating on affordability, healthcare, and ethics, whereas Paxton focuses on immigration, border security, and Trump’s agenda.

AI: A Key Issue in the Race

Artificial intelligence has unexpectedly become significant in the Senate race. Paxton emphasizes competitiveness with China, proposing restrictions on data centers’ energy use and banning Chinese technology. He also suggests holding AI companies accountable if their tools harm children.

Talarico views AI through consumer protection, proposing infrastructure costs should not be shifted onto Texans. He advocates for local authority over data center placement and an “AI dividend” to share economic benefits with Americans.
