White Sox Strategy for AL Division Series Game 2

2 hours ago 0

The Chicago White Sox employed Anthony Kay to pitch 1 1/3 relief innings during Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field on Saturday. Kay is set to resume an important role in Game 2 on Monday.

White Sox manager Will Venable stated, “We’ll start with Anthony Kay and plan things out as we go.” He noted the inclusion of Sean Burke in a future role, along with other available players. During the fifth inning of Game 1 on Saturday, Kay allowed one hit and issued one walk in his scoreless performance, contributing to the 3-0 victory. Kay’s postseason experience includes a crucial role with two outs against the Houston Astros in Game 2 of the wild-card series, where he was credited with the win.

“It’s been interesting watching him in a different role,” remarked Venable about Kay’s transition from starting 31 of his 33 regular season outings. “His velocity has increased, but we haven’t seen him comfortably extend his innings. He’s delivered significant pitches and helped us in tough situations.”

Prior to Monday’s Game 2, the White Sox and Guardians conducted workouts on Sunday at Progressive Field.

Burke Prepares for Game 2 Activation

White Sox pitcher Sean Burke expressed readiness for his next opportunity to pitch. On Sunday, he affirmed, “Whenever my name gets called to pitch, I’ll be ready.” Burke’s previous postseason start involved allowing three solo home runs, with a total of four hits, five strikeouts, and no walks over four innings.

“Overall, I felt good about how I pitched,” Burke reflected, acknowledging the nature of playoff baseball as mistakes get punished more severely. “But I felt the crispness of my delivery was strong.”

His performance during the regular season against the Guardians included a 2-0 record, a 1.04 ERA, and 21 strikeouts across three outings.

Sox Target Peters-Like Plate Discipline

Tristan Peters demonstrated a noteworthy 18-pitch plate appearance against starter Gavin Williams on September 14, ultimately securing a walk with 12 foul balls. The Sox aim to replicate Peters’ mentality.

“We’re aiming for a similar approach throughout our lineup,” Venable stated. “Fouling off pitches and staying patient to challenge Williams is key to navigating the game.”

Managing Smith and Taylor’s Workload

After extensive usage in Game 1, Hagen Smith and Grant Taylor’s roles for Game 2 remain uncertain. Smith pitched 2 2/3 innings as the opener, while Taylor delivered the final four innings with six strikeouts, earning the save.

“We want to responsibly manage their appearance duration,” Venable emphasized. “Our strategy involves balancing their workload for optimal effectiveness without risking injury.”

With an off day planned before Game 2, the team is assessing player recovery and readiness.
