Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton experienced a severe ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite the severity of the injury, it took a moment for Thornton to fully register what had happened.
During the fourth quarter at Allegiant Stadium, with Kansas City trailing 19-17, the Chiefs faced a crucial third-and-4. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes launched a deep pass down the left sideline, which Thornton caught for a 55-yard gain. However, Raiders safety Treydan Stukes tackled him from behind, landing on Thornton’s left ankle.
Initially, Thornton appeared ready to celebrate the crucial play. Upon attempting to stand, he noticed his left foot was unnaturally twisted. The sight of the injury was highly disturbing.
CBS commentators Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt were visibly disturbed when they viewed the replay. Watt remarked, “Oh, no,” while Nantz added, “Oh my goodness. I don’t even want to look at it.”
Following the incident, medical personnel placed an air cast on Thornton’s leg and carted him off the field. As of publication, the Chiefs confirmed an ankle injury but did not offer a detailed diagnosis.
Thornton had been making significant strides with Kansas City. Originally a second-round pick by the Patriots in 2022, he joined the Chiefs’ practice squad in November 2024 and secured a roster spot in 2025. Last season, he caught 19 passes for 438 yards and scored three touchdowns.
Before the injury, Thornton recorded his first 100-yard performance with five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. His contributions were critical, especially with Rashee Rice also sidelined due to a hamstring injury.
Thornton’s 55-yard reception led to Kenneth Walker’s decisive touchdown, securing a 30-27 victory for Kansas City. This win improved their record to 4-0. While the injury appears severe, there is hope for a less serious outcome than it initially seemed.
