Actor Sebastian Stan discussed the conservative interpretation of his latest film, “Fjord,” during an appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” In “Fjord,” Stan and actress Renate Reinsve play a Romanian Norwegian Christian couple accused of child abuse after moving to a progressive Norwegian village. The film explores their struggle to regain custody from a society wary of their traditional values.
During the interview, host Michael Kosta mentioned that the film’s themes could be perceived as conservative. Stan acknowledged this perspective but emphasized that it does not discredit the family’s challenges depicted in the film. Stan argued for understanding different perspectives without immediate judgment, stating, “If a family is trying to stay together, we should at least give them the benefit of the doubt.” He encourages audiences to consider perspectives like those of his characters, despite not growing up in a religious household himself.
Stan rejected allegations of the film promoting a right-wing ideology in a separate interview with USA Today. He finds it “almost laughable” to label “Fjord” as a “MAGA film” and points out that the story of an immigrant family torn apart is relevant in various contexts, not just in the United States. He criticized the dismissive attitude on social media, describing it as dangerous and naive.
The film “Fjord” is loosely based on a real 2015 case involving Norwegian residents Ruth and Marius Bodnariu, who temporarily lost custody of their children. The family was separated for several months before reunification after court proceedings.
In addition to his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stan portrayed a young Donald Trump in the 2024 film “The Apprentice.” Despite criticism of Trump, Stan defended his involvement in the film and emphasized the importance of understanding individuals we feel strong emotions about, whether positive or negative.
Curtis Houck, NewsBusters managing editor, remarked on the irony of Stan’s defense of “Fjord,” following his role in “The Apprentice,” highlighting the differing reception by the Hollywood press.
