CDC Issues Quarantine Orders for Cruise Ship Passengers Amid Hantavirus Concerns

Health officials in the United States have imposed quarantine orders for two passengers from a cruise ship linked to a hantavirus outbreak. These passengers are currently in a Nebraska hospital. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed this information in a statement, noting that the orders were signed by Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, the acting director of the CDC.

Quarantine orders are a rare legal measure that can include fines and imprisonment if someone refuses to comply with public health directives. As per the CDC, all 18 passengers being monitored at the Nebraska hospital have been requested to remain in the facility until May 31. This is to ensure a full observation period.

During a conference call with reporters, Dr. David Fitter from the CDC confirmed that no hantavirus cases have been detected among the returned U.S. passengers. However, hantavirus symptoms can take up to 42 days to manifest, as explained by Jodie Guest, senior vice chair of epidemiology at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. She acknowledged that the quarantine could feel lengthy but emphasized that the incubation period necessitates this duration.

The CDC also reported that since the passengers disembarked, there have been three additional hantavirus cases. These cases have been identified in France, Spain, and Canada. According to the World Health Organization, 11 hantavirus cases connected to the cruise have been recorded, including three fatalities. Laboratory tests have confirmed eight of these cases.

Hantaviruses are often contracted by inhaling airborne particles contaminated by rodent droppings. However, the current outbreak involves the Andes virus, which may rarely spread through person-to-person contact. Public health officials have assessed the risk to the general public from the cruise ship outbreak as low.
