President Trump has successfully unseated Representative Thomas Massie, a key Republican critic in Congress, while also securing victories in other primary contests. Representative Massie of Kentucky ran a determined campaign against his Trump-backed opponent but was defeated on Tuesday night.
President Trump’s approval rating is currently low. The Republican Party risks losing seats in the House, with concerns about the Senate as well. Despite this, loyalty to Trump remains strong among Republican primary voters, leaving no room for dissenters.
Trump-endorsed Republicans claimed victories or led in primaries on Tuesday across Georgia, Alabama, and Kentucky. In these states, Trump critic Representative Thomas Massie was removed from Congress. Earlier in Texas, Trump’s endorsement of Ken Paxton significantly impacted Senator John Cornyn’s chances of retaining his seat, ahead of a runoff next week.
Tuesday’s primaries in six states offered further proof that even during Trump’s second term, when he is nearing 80 and has put the party in political jeopardy before the midterms, Republicans remain deeply loyal to him.
Rep. Massie discovered there’s no room for skeptics of Trump in the GOP.
The lesson for Republican politicians in primaries is evident: opposing Trump comes with significant risks. In Kentucky, Massie shared the same fate as Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana did recently. Several Indiana state senators also lost their primary races this month for resisting Trump’s redistricting efforts. In each case, Trump-endorsed challengers defeated the incumbents.
