Angel Reese had a standout performance in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. After a mixed Game 1, she delivered an impressive 30 points and 16 rebounds, leading the Atlanta Dream to a 79-65 victory over the Golden State Valkyries. This achievement marked her as the youngest player with at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a playoff game. Besides her scoring, Reese contributed with 3 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal.
The Dream’s victory snapped a long losing streak in the Finals. Previously, they had been swept in 2010, 2011, and 2013 and lost the series opener, bringing their championship series record to 0-10. Reese’s performance was crucial in breaking this streak, showcasing one of the best games of her career.
Before the game, a controversy arose as both teams opted to skip the national anthem, contravening WNBA rules. The league has yet to respond to questions regarding this absence.
During the game, Reese’s aggressive play was evident. She scored 8 points in the first quarter and added 7 more in the second, ending the first half with 15 points. This surpassed her entire scoring output from Game 1.
Despite a brief incident in the third quarter where Reese expressed frustration, she quickly refocused. Her efforts in the third quarter resulted in 9 points, equal to the Valkyries’ entire output for that period. Notably, she played through the third quarter without incurring additional fouls despite starting with three.
Both teams struggled from the field in the third quarter, but Atlanta excelled at the free-throw line, going 12-for-12, while the Valkyries failed to draw any free throws by relying on outside shooting.
The Dream extended their lead to 21 points in the fourth quarter. Reese capped off her night with a long three-pointer, putting Atlanta ahead 74-55. The series now moves to Atlanta State Farm Arena for Game 3.
