Members of the Fire Department responded on Saturday to a shipyard on Staten Island where two explosions occurred, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. These explosions were reported at May Ship Repair Contracting Corporation following a fire on a dock.
The family owning the shipyard, represented by Nadia Adam, the executive vice president, reported the fire’s origin on a dock undergoing construction for the past nine months without any prior issues. The individual who lost his life was a subcontractor associated with the company on several projects. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
The Fire and Police Departments are actively investigating the incident, with the company providing full cooperation. Ms. Adam emphasized the importance of safety and the company’s commitment to understanding the incident’s details. She described the company as a small, family-run business with local hires and fewer than 50 employees.
The incident happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Ms. Adam was present at her office when the explosion was reported. The company promptly contacted emergency services and followed established safety protocols.
