At least 19 individuals sustained injuries during a stampede at Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, on Sunday morning. Horry County Fire Rescue teams, with support from local law enforcement, arrived at a ‘stage area’ near South Ocean Boulevard around 1:05 a.m. to assist the affected individuals.
While officials did not confirm the event by name, the Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival was in progress at the time, as noted by the Town of Atlantic Beach. This annual festival takes place over Memorial Day weekend and attracts large crowds.
Horry County Fire Rescue reported that three people were taken to a hospital for medical attention. Additional attendees might have sought medical care independently. All reported injuries are not life-threatening.
Authorities have not disclosed what sparked the stampede. The festival typically draws up to 40,000 visitors to the area during Memorial Day weekend, as per the Town of Atlantic Beach.
