Senator Ted Cruz of Texas highlighted the decision to strike Iran as highly important. He criticized the potential deal, fearing it would leave Iran stronger and well-funded. According to him, allowing Iran to enrich uranium and control crucial maritime routes would be a significant error.

Similarly, Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina disapproved of any agreement that lets Iran remain dominant in the region. Senator Roger Wicker warned against a proposed 60-day ceasefire, suggesting it could nullify previous military efforts.

President Trump dismissed his critics, stating the deal is still in progress. He pointed out that it will be distinct from the previous nuclear agreement under the Obama administration. Trump emphasized the importance of careful negotiations and maintaining a blockade on Iranian ports until a satisfactory agreement is reached.

Not all lawmakers oppose Trump’s approach. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky supports the strategy, emphasizing that negotiations are essential in concluding wars. The emerging proposal involves ending the conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran relinquishing its uranium stockpile.

Public and Political Reactions

The war, which started with an attack by the U.S. and Israel on February 28, is unpopular among the public. The conflict has been costly for American taxpayers and resulted in casualties. Initially, Trump predicted a quick resolution, but tensions persist. The closure of the strait has disrupted energy supplies and affected prices globally.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and past National Security Adviser John Bolton are critical of the draft deal, equating it to the Obama-era agreement. They worry it may empower Iran further, enabling nuclear ambitions and supporting terrorism.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized Trump’s strong stance against Iran during a diplomatic visit in India. Rubio stated that Trump’s commitment to preventing a nuclear-armed Iran should remain unquestioned.

Representative Thomas Massie, generally critical of Trump, hinted that opposition from figures like Graham and Cruz may indicate the deal’s potential effectiveness. Massie will not return to Congress, having lost his primary race to a Trump-backed candidate.
