Iva Jović, an 18-year-old tennis talent from Torrance, California, recently crossed paths with Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros. The Serbian tennis champion, known for his mentoring role with Jović, stopped to discuss her progress. They had met for tutorials in January in Australia, and Djokovic wanted to check on her preparation for the French Open.
In a recent interview, Jović recounted Djokovic’s encouragement and tactical advice, specifically tailored for playing on clay. Although she did not disclose the details, she indicated it focused on strategy.
Jović applied this mentorship effectively in her second-round match against Emma Navarro with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Displaying mastery of controlled aggression, she controlled the match by pushing Navarro into challenging positions.
Both Jović and Navarro, though separated by seven years, are navigating their paths on the WTA Tour. Jović quickly developed a reputation for aggressive play, while Navarro is working on enhancing her playing style amid health challenges.
Navarro’s journey involved signing deals with brands like Fila and Red Bull while struggling with performance consistency. Facing health issues, she took a break to focus on health and balance her personal life with the demands of the tennis circuit. Her approach became flexible, adapting training routines based on daily needs.
This approach revitalized Navarro at the Strasbourg International, where she won the title against top players and embraced strategic play blending defense and opportunistic offense.
Despite early setbacks upon her return, such as an early exit at the Italian Open, Navarro’s focus and renewed energy paid off at Strasbourg.
Jović, in contrast, is cementing her place among the top ranks. Under coach Tom Gutteridge, she’s been honing her aggressive play style, maintaining pressure and diversifying tactics, such as drop shots and using the full court.
Gutteridge emphasizes the need for an aggressive mentality, pushing Jović to seize opportunities promptly, showcasing determination and strategic acumen. Jović’s future on the court looks promising as she embraces her potential and refines her game.
