Spurs Push Thunder to Game 7 in Western Conference Finals

1 month ago 0

The San Antonio Spurs have advanced the NBA’s Western Conference finals to a decisive Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Spurs secured a commanding 118-91 victory in Game 6, played on Thursday, May 28, at their home court.

The Thunder had effectively swept their initial postseason series but encountered difficulties as they faced the Spurs. During the regular season, San Antonio defeated Oklahoma City in four out of their five encounters, including a 117-102 win on Christmas Day.

Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs brilliantly, notching a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds during Game 6. He achieved a shooting accuracy of 10-for-21 from the field, including 4-for-9 from beyond the arc, all within 28 minutes of play.

We played together and passed the ball, Wembanyama said. We trusted the game plan as always.

San Antonio excelled in the third quarter, overpowering the Thunder with a 32-13 score. The Spurs orchestrated a remarkable 20-0 run in this period.

I think we need to be consistent on defense, Wembanyama commented. Outscoring them 20-0 isn’t realistic, but we want to maintain consistency.

Wembanyama also played a pivotal defensive role, contributing to three of the team’s seven blocks.

Stephon Castle matched defensively against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has won MVP twice. The Thunder star struggled throughout the game, managing only 15 points. He shot 6-of-18 from the field and missed all five attempts from three-point range within his 28 minutes on the court. Gilgeous-Alexander succeeded from the free-throw line three out of three times.

A lot of the shots I’ve taken before felt right, Gilgeous-Alexander mentioned. They’re just not going in, and it’s too late to change shooting techniques now.

Despite having home-court advantage, Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged that the Spurs’ willpower would be formidable.

We’re a motivated group and ready for the challenge ahead, he stated. Anything can happen in a Game 7. Playing at home is nice, but doesn’t guarantee anything. You have to outperform them.

Game 7 is scheduled at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The tip-off will be at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 30. The match will broadcast on NBC and stream on Peacock.
