Anthony Kay, a key starter for the Chicago White Sox, maintains unwavering confidence despite a challenging start. Speaking on Thursday, Kay stated, “I’m here to do a job and they know I’m capable of doing it. You have to keep that confidence, stack good days together, and make positive changes.” His recent performance supports his words, going 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA, holding opponents to a .227 batting average, and recording 24 strikeouts over his last five starts. He is set to take the mound against the Detroit Tigers at Rate Field on Saturday.
Kay’s journey this season is noted with visible improvement. According to manager Will Venable, “He’s made his adjustments.” Spending time pitching in Japan during 2024 and 2025, before returning to the MLB, has contributed to his adaptability. Venable praised Kay’s dedication, highlighting how Kay overcame a difficult start by adjusting his pitch strategy.
Currently, Kay holds a 4-1 record with a 3.96 ERA, 39 strikeouts, and 23 walks in 52 1/3 innings, also hitting ten batters. His initial six outings resulted in a 6.12 ERA. The last five games showed significant progress, with only six earned runs over 27 innings. Conversations with pitching coach Zach Bove about pitch selection and early counts played a crucial role in these improvements. “A lot of pitches weren’t in the zone,” Kay remarked. “We worked on sequencing to get into better pitcher counts.”
His broad experience includes tenures with the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets before signing a two-year contract with the White Sox. Despite early doubts, Kay affirms, “The last month I’ve shown I’m capable.” His presence contributes to team camaraderie, often light-heartedly challenging teammates to keep everyone focused and humble.
Relief Pitcher Jordan Leasure Faces Setback
In team roster news, reliever Jordan Leasure entered the 15-day injured list with a right flexor strain. “Warming up, didn’t feel great, and in the game against the Twins, the discomfort increased,” Leasure explained. Choosing to protect his health and team performance, he signaled the need to check his condition.
Leasure, with an ERA of 6.27 over 18 appearances, has encountered elbow soreness this season. “There’s a flexor strain, so we’re looking at an eight to 10-week shutdown,” said manager Venable. This period is necessary for recovery, aiming to rebuild Leasure’s strength.
In response to this, Tyler Gilbert has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to fill Leasure’s spot in the lineup.
