Senior midfielder Madelyn Cummins from Lake Forest is experienced in high-pressure playoff situations. A consistent performer over four years, she played a crucial role in leading the Scouts to a Class 2A supersectional during her freshman year. When awarded a penalty kick in the second half of a 0-0 game against Lake Zurich in the 2A Lake Zurich Sectional championship, Cummins was ready.
We’ve been practicing penalty kicks a lot, so I felt pretty prepared. We lost last year in regionals on penalty kicks, so that’s big pressure. You have to get used to that pressure. Stepping up there is not comfortable, but obviously that’s something you have to do to win the game.
Cummins stated.
In the 55th minute, Cummins successfully scored the penalty kick to secure a 1-0 victory for the third-seeded Scouts over the fifth-seeded Lake Zurich. Lake Forest, which now holds a record of 15-7, had previously defeated Lake Zurich by a single goal in a North Suburban Conference game. They will face Crystal Lake Central, who stand at 19-2, in the Lake Zurich Supersectional.
Commenting on the upcoming match, Cummins expressed hope to surpass the challenge faced in the supersectional in 2023. My freshman year, we lost a tough game, so we’re hoping to get past that
she said. Expressing her excitement, Cummins added, It’s such an honor to advance. I was so happy and had so many thoughts going through my mind after the game. Everyone played their hearts out. We worked hard.
The goal, her 14th of the season, came with effort. Lake Zurich’s senior goalkeeper Kelly Nelson managed to get both hands on the shot directed at the upper-left corner but couldn’t stop it from going in. Shortly after scoring, Cummins suffered a hit to her nose by the ball and had to exit the game temporarily. I was exhausted,
she said, But I was ready for that PK. I wanted it.
Lake Forest’s coach, Ty Stuckslager, was confident in Cummins taking the penalty. Maddy is a competitor,
Stuckslager remarked. She is deceiving with her speed and has a great first touch and understands what has to be done. She is working in these situations, and toward the end of the game, she exhibited the most poise she had all game.
This dynamic story of athletic determination and teamwork continues to develop as updates are expected.
