In East Rutherford, N.J., tensions arose within the New York Giants as linebacker Abdul Carter openly criticized quarterback Jaxson Dart. Dart had recently read a statement following his decision to introduce President Donald Trump at a rally. Carter, expressing his views after an offseason workout, said the situation transcended football and demanded accountability.
Carter stated, “He not only represents himself and what he does, but he represents all of us and that goes for anybody who wears a Giants uniform.” He declared his opposition to Dart’s association with Trump, emphasizing the significance of standing by his own beliefs.
The controversy began when Carter, upon confirming Dart’s appearance with Trump through video, expressed dissent on social media, though the posts were later removed. Despite the public disagreement, Carter clarified that his relationship with Dart remained intact. “It doesn’t mean that me and Jaxson hate each other or we have beef,” he noted, highlighting their shared objectives for the team.
Trump has notably critiqued diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, labeling them as discriminatory. These programs have benefited Black Americans in both government and private sectors. Earlier this year, Trump faced backlash for sharing a racist video about the Obamas.
In his 562-word statement, Dart emphasized his respect for the presidency, describing the invitation to introduce Trump as a unique opportunity. He refrained from mentioning Trump directly in his statement and, in response to inquiries, referenced the written statement. Carter shared that there was no apology from Dart for his presence at the event.
Carter expressed, “I don’t want him to say he’s sorry. Stand on what you believe in. But it can’t be a problem when I stand on what I believe in.” Dart confirmed having frank discussions with his teammates, including Carter, to address the incident.
Jameis Winston, a veteran quarterback, and Coach John Harbaugh commented on the situation. Winston welcomed the dialogue and praised the players for understanding their platform and beliefs. Harbaugh maintained that the incident would not disrupt team harmony, valuing the conversation as productive and establishing room for open communication among team members.
Separately, receiver Gunner Olszewski sustained a noncontact injury, grasping his right leg during practice. Despite the disappointing nature of the incident, the extent of his injury remains under evaluation.
Additionally, Arvell Reese, the No. 5 pick from Ohio State, completed his rookie contract, finalizing the signings of the draft class. No. 10 pick Francis “Sisi” Mauigoa had signed his contract earlier in the week.
