Lincoln-Way West Triumphs in Regional Championship Game

1 month ago 0

Lincoln-Way West’s Jackson Mansker experienced a dramatic moment during the Class 4A Homewood-Flossmoor Regional championship game. Mansker, noted for his calm demeanor, saw his potential home run thwarted by a remarkable catch from junior center fielder Marcos Morales of the Vikings. The moment incited a rare outburst from Mansker, who punched the bench, resulting in three bloody knuckles that required bandaging.

Despite the setback, Mansker channeled his frustration positively. In his next at-bat, he hit a two-run home run, breaking a tie and leading the Warriors to a 6-2 victory over the host Vikings. Carson Paulas contributed with two hits and two RBIs, helping Lincoln-Way West secure its sixth regional title and fourth in five years. Owen Chudzinski earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings in relief.

Senior catcher Owen Weber played a critical role with a defensive maneuver that stopped a potential Vikings rally in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and the score tied at 2-2, Weber retrieved a bouncing pitch and executed an inning-ending pickoff at third base.

Mansker’s day at the plate included an initial double, a robbed home run, and a strategic intentional walk by the Vikings later in the game. Mansker credited assistant coach Jeff Struebing for an adjustment in his batting stance, lifting his left heel, which he initially resisted but found effective on game day.

Struebing noted the tweak improved Mansker’s swing, highlighting his athletic prowess. This change contributed to Mansker’s impactful performance. Paulas, known for setting the pace as the leadoff hitter, acknowledged Mansker’s reliability and influence both as a teammate and friend.
