Colombian Elections: A Battle Between Left and Far Right

1 month ago 0

Colombians are preparing for a significant presidential election this Sunday. Current polls reveal a tight race between leftist and far-right candidates, marking a crucial moment for the region’s political landscape.

Iván Cepeda is leading on the left. A scholarly senator, he seeks to continue the legacy of Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s current president who had frequent altercations with former President Trump. Cepeda’s election would maintain Colombia among the prominent Latin American nations with leftist administrations, alongside Mexico and Brazil.

Abelardo De La Espriella represents the far right. A lawyer with no prior electoral experience, his assertive speeches and plans for 10 mega-prisons have drawn parallels to El Salvador’s leader, Nayib Bukele. De La Espriella’s campaign has been gaining ground in recent weeks.

Trailing these two is Paloma Valencia, a conservative senator supported by influential figures like former President Álvaro Uribe. Though she could become Colombia’s first female president, Valencia’s campaign has seemingly lost momentum to De La Espriella.
