Israeli Forces Capture Strategic Beaufort in Lebanon

Israeli soldiers have seized a key hilltop in southern Lebanon, crowned by the Beaufort Castle. The Israeli military made the announcement on Sunday, marking part of its most extensive invasion of the country in decades.

This development is significant as it calls up past memories of battles for both Israel and Lebanon. The area was the center of conflict during Israel’s nearly 20-year occupation of southern Lebanon, which ended in 2000. During that time, Hezbollah led a strong insurgency, eventually forcing Israeli withdrawal.

Hezbollah and the Lebanese government have not yet responded to the seizure of Beaufort. As of now, Israeli leaders discuss re-establishing a security zone in Lebanon to deter attacks from Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the capture as a ‘dramatic step’ and confirmed that troops would keep advancing in Lebanon. However, military analysts doubt that this move will stop Hezbollah from launching attacks with rockets and drones against the Israeli army or urban centers.

Haim Har-Zahav, an Israeli writer who served during the occupation in the 1990s, warned that this action might result in a drawn-out occupation and conflict similar to past experiences, which many Israelis view as a strategic blunder.
