United Airlines Flight Returns Due to Bluetooth Device Scare

4 weeks ago 0

A recent incident involving a United Airlines flight caused a major disruption. This flight, traveling from Newark, N.J., to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, made a sudden turnaround due to a potential security threat.

The flight had been expected to land in Spain after an lengthy journey of nearly eight hours. Instead, it returned to Newark after spending 4 hours and 24 minutes in the air. United Airlines communicated to NPR via email that this decision was taken to manage a security concern.

Passengers on board shared their experiences on social media. Posts included photos and videos taken during the flight or at the airport, with timestamps matching the flight’s real schedule. The general understanding was that a Bluetooth device on board was the issue. Flight attendants had asked passengers to deactivate their Bluetooth devices. Some inflight announcements led to comments like, ‘this little joke is ruining it for everyone.’

Additional details emerged from audio archived by LiveATC.net. In the recordings, one individual inquired about the reason for the flight’s return. A response explained that a security detail was involved because a Bluetooth speaker was labeled with a specific four-letter word.

The term didn’t signify a curse but was a trigger for airline security protocols. A passenger reported seeing a Bluetooth network with the label ‘BOMB.’ They shared a TikTok video of themselves later in Palma de Mallorca, suggesting they eventually reached their destination.

Another source from Reddit, who claimed to be related to a passenger, confirmed the Bluetooth device belonged to a teenager and was labeled with the word ‘bomb.’ The flight eventually resumed and landed in Palma de Mallorca at 3:47 p.m. local time on Sunday, approximately 9 and a half hours behind schedule.
