The Indiana Fever started their season with a balanced 4-4 record. However, some fans are pointing fingers at head coach Stephanie White for potentially costing the team some victories.
Coach White recently received criticism for her controversial decision to bench key players Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston early in games. This move was notably blamed for the team’s 100-84 defeat against the Portland Fire last Saturday.
Questionable Decisions
Following the loss, White faced questions regarding her decision to bench Clark and Boston while the Fever led by four points, just three minutes into the first quarter. This choice led to a 13-2 run by Portland. Once Clark and Boston returned to the court, the Fever had slipped behind by seven points.
White explained, according to the Indy Star, “AB is still on a minutes restriction, so that’s why she’s coming out. And that’s typically around the same time we’ve taken Caitlin out before. We didn’t do this in Golden State because we didn’t want Raven Johnson in that environment without another ball-handler on the floor. That’s been our usual substitution pattern.”
Fan Backlash
Despite the explanation, some Fever supporters expressed frustration, particularly about Clark’s minutes being affected. A segment of fans even suggested White should be replaced.
- One fan criticized, “White is killing CC’s confidence and swagger. Anyone watching last night might question why after a Portland timeout, CC and AB were pulled. I wish CC would take a health leave of absence to show the league reality.”
- Another fan commented, “The Fever coach is embarrassing to Indiana fans. Until a real coach arrives, it’s a waste of money and time. We love the Fever and want to support them, but it’s clear there’s an issue with #22.”
- “What a foolish move. It’s time to fire White,” a third fan expressed.
- “Not even a rookie coach would make that decision. White should go,” declared another user.
- “It was a nonsensical explanation. The Fever should fix this before it worsens,” another user wrote.
- “Coach is horrible, I hope CC will be set free,” another fan replied.
The situation has left fans divided, and the team’s management may need to consider these concerns moving forward.
