During Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, Jason Heyward gave the Chicago Cubs a memorable pep talk. Similarly, Treylan Webster delivered an inspirational message to his teammates, the Brother Rice Crusaders, in a crucial moment. “It’s always good to have someone talking to you,” Webster explained. “I remind them, ‘You’ve worked all your life for this. It’s not time to panic. You’ve got this. We have each other and we’re going to do it together.'”
Webster’s encouragement was pivotal. He followed his words with action, driving in a game-tying RBI during a seventh-inning rally. The Crusaders overcame a four-run deficit, securing a 7-6 victory in extra innings against Reavis in the Class 4A Brother Rice Sectional semifinal in Chicago.
Brady Cunningham, a Texas A&M recruit, was critical in the comeback with a three-run home run. Colin Campbell, committed to Louisville, scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Aidan Dillon completed the final three innings without allowing a hit, earning the win.
The Crusaders, now holding a 28-10 record, will face fourth-seeded Mount Carmel in the sectional championship. For Reavis, Morton College recruit Jonathan Liesen hit a home run and scored three runs, while Juan Avila and Anthony Perez each drove in two runs. Pitcher Robert Soto Jr. recorded six strikeouts in over six innings but allowed six earned runs.
At a tense moment, Webster stepped up with bases loaded in the seventh. His infield single tied the game and was instrumental to their victory. Webster remarked, “There were nerves, but they were good nerves. I knew I was going to come through for my team. It wasn’t pretty, but I got it done.”
Webster’s leadership is lauded by his teammates. Cunningham shared, “Trey’s been our guy all year. He supports everyone during their lows and cheers during their highs. We’d be nowhere without Trey.”
Sean McBride, the Brother Rice coach, has watched Webster develop into a leader since seventh grade. “Trey has become this incredible leader and the baseball gods reward that,” he noted.
Webster credits his grit to his early years in wrestling. “In wrestling, you’re going to lose,” he stated. “You’re going to get punched in the mouth. That’s what happened here. They beat us in the first half, but you never quit. You come back, stay tough, show resilience.” Webster ensured his team embodied that resilience, resulting in a memorable victory.
