49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan Recovering After Car Accident

Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, was present at the team’s training camp. This follows reports of his recent car accident earlier this month, during which he sustained multiple injuries.

Shanahan was observed on the training field alongside John Lynch, the 49ers’ general manager. According to a report by The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, Shanahan sported sunglasses and a soft cast on his left hand, and the swelling on his face had visibly decreased since the mishap.

Players such as Kyle Juszczyk, Fred Warner, and Dre Greenlaw greeted Shanahan during his short visit of just over 30 minutes at the camp. The team had initially reported the accident on Saturday, detailing that Shanahan’s injuries were non-life-threatening. His role at the camp has been limited during this time.

Shanahan’s injuries comprised a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, and over 40 stitches to his face. He also suffered a severe concussion during the crash that occurred on July 14 near his home in northern California.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner reported, assistant head coach Chris Foerster, 64, is temporarily handling some of Shanahan’s duties. General Manager Lynch noted the need for a collaborative effort to cover for Shanahan during his recovery.

Last year, Shanahan led the 49ers to a commendable 12-5 record, securing a spot in the NFL Playoffs. There, they achieved a notable victory over the Philadelphia Eagles before being defeated by the Seattle Seahawks, who eventually won the Super Bowl.

The 49ers currently rank among the top 10 or 11 teams for odds of winning the 2027 Super Bowl. The offseason saw the team enhance its roster by signing Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans. This addition provides a valuable asset for Brock Purdy, the team’s quarterback entering his fourth year.

The 49ers will begin their preseason with a home game against the Tennessee Titans on August 13. It’s yet to be determined whether Foerster will occupy the sidelines as acting head coach for this game. Shanahan must complete concussion protocol cleanly before returning to full-time coaching duties.

The team does not anticipate Shanahan’s absence from their first regular-season game scheduled for September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
