9/11 South Tower Steel Beam Travels Across America

1 month ago 0

A significant piece of steel from the World Trade Center’s South Tower, weighing nearly 17,000 pounds, has arrived in Cincinnati. This steel beam offers a chance for people far from Ground Zero to connect with 9/11 history.

‘Never forgetting the sacrifice and bravery of our nation’s heroes, as well as our lost loved ones, is a generational promise that every American can help keep,’ said Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

The 21-foot beam is part of Tunnel to Towers’ Steel Across America tour, marking 25 years since the 9/11 attacks. The memorial travels the country, allowing communities to engage with this historical artifact.

Scott Nokes, a former Marine and Tunnel to Towers ambassador, joined Cincinnati locals, including firefighters and community members, at the Fire Museum to welcome the steel beam. Nokes shared his personal connection to the foundation, expressing his commitment to sharing the stories of those lost on September 11.

Nokes, from New Jersey, served in Afghanistan before pursuing a career in firefighting. In 2016, a severe medical condition led to him becoming a double amputee and legally blind. In December 2019, Tunnel to Towers provided Nokes a custom, mortgage-free smart home, aiding his independence.

The ceremony in Cincinnati featured a color guard, bagpipes, national anthem, and remarks from city and fire leaders. The community had the opportunity to honor the memory of 9/11 victims and first responders.

Following Cincinnati, the tour includes stops at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial in Boston, and the White House, before concluding in New York City.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation continues its mission to provide mortgage-free homes to injured veterans and first responders, honoring 343 FDNY firefighters lost on 9/11 with 343 homes this year.
