A 66-year-old great-grandmother was tragically killed in an unprovoked stabbing on a train in Atlanta. Federal charges have been filed against John Elijah Matthews, prompting discussions about the safety of Atlanta’s transit system. Her daughter has expressed grief and is demanding improved security measures.
Bruce Levell, former chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), has emphasized the need to address safety concerns. The transit system, one of the busiest in the region, faces challenges, especially from homeless individuals seeking refuge on trains.
The Trump administration has initiated a federal investigation into the Atlanta transit system. This follows a series of violent incidents, including two stabbings.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the Federal Transit Administration will audit MARTA. He cited worrisome rates of violent occurrences on the system. “I want answers from Atlanta. The number of assaults, robberies, and rapes on MARTA’s trains is more than three times the national average,” he stated.
The investigation was prompted by the murder of Margaret Swan, who was allegedly killed by a homeless man on a MARTA train. John Elijah Matthews is charged federally for committing an act of violence causing death on a mass transportation system. “Margaret’s family deserves accountability. No one should be forced to fear for their safety on public transit,” Duffy added.
On June 3, a letter was sent by the Federal Transit Administration to MARTA’s Interim CEO. It outlined plans to audit the agency’s safety measures. The audit will focus on protecting transit workers and passengers. An examination will also be conducted on MARTA’s plans to reduce crime and manage funds.
Duffy has given MARTA a 15-day deadline to provide safety plans and assault reports. This audit follows violence on MARTA trains, underscoring the need for serious reform.
Fulton County records show Matthews faces local charges, including felony murder. Federal prosecutors will decide if the death penalty will be sought.
The attack occurred on May 30. Matthews reportedly approached Swan on a moving train, cut her throat, and stabbed her multiple times. Despite passengers calling for help, Swan succumbed to her injuries.
Surveillance footage indicates Matthews stood near Swan before initiating the attack. He then left the train with the weapon. MARTA police quickly apprehended him. Matthews was allegedly holding a knife when encountered by police.
MARTA officers observed blood on Matthews’ clothes and found a folding knife in his possession. Despite attempts at medical aid, Swan was pronounced dead.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to improve safety measures and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
