CBP Seizes Significant Haul of Narcotics at Southern Border

4 weeks ago 0

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently intercepted over $300,000 worth of narcotics in two separate vehicle stops within a single day. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenge of drug smuggling at the southern U.S. border amid a decrease in immigration numbers.

Narcotics Seized in Vehicle Stops

On May 17, at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, a 2013 Honda Civic was flagged for further inspection when an imaging system detected unusual features in the car’s firewall. Officers found six packages of white fentanyl powder valued at approximately $113,600, alongside 8.4 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $161,600.

A similar scenario played out roughly 100 miles away at the Calexico East Port of Entry. There, officials inspected a 2011 Nissan Cube and, upon scanning the vehicle, discovered 63 packets of methamphetamine hidden in the flooring.

Ongoing Efforts and Achievements

CBP officials lauded the successful interceptions. San Diego Director of Field Operations, Sidney Aki, emphasized the dedication of officers who work tirelessly to prevent dangerous drugs from entering the U.S. “Our officers remain vigilant around the clock, and these significant seizures are a direct result of their commitment to keeping dangerous drugs like these from entering our country,” Aki stated.

Despite a significant drop in immigration crossings, from over 144,000 encounters in December 2024 to about 10,000 in April, CBP continues to face high-profile smuggling attempts involving narcotics, weapons, and human trafficking.

Recent Smuggling Attempts

Recent operations have uncovered efforts to smuggle a range of illicit items. For instance, a vehicle carrying a rocket-propelled grenade launcher was thwarted, dozens of immigrants were found hidden in a semi-truck, and a sea-bound escape was stopped off the Dominican Republic with aerial support.

According to a CBP statement, “CBP officers along the southwest border stop illegal activity, including the smuggling of drugs and humans, and facilitate lawful entry for millions of legitimate travelers into the United States.” The agency views these operations as part of an ongoing strategy initiated during former President Donald Trump’s tenure and under the direction of DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
