Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs is focused on winning championships and NBA MVP awards. However, his off-court activities are gaining attention, adding to his intriguing persona.
Earlier in the postseason, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne detailed Wembanyama’s adventure at the Shaolin Temple in China last summer. During this time, he dribbled a ball up a mountain route in 4.5 hours. Now, as Wembanyama and the Spurs compete against the New York Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals, his reputation is expanding further.
The Athletic’s Jared Weiss explored Wembanyama’s journey to becoming the NBA’s leading figure. Wembanyama has expressed his determination, stating that he will ensure basketball recognizes him as its face. Yet, he is not willing to make compromises to achieve this.
Before joining the NBA, Wembanyama rejected lucrative marketing deals from beverage companies, despite earning around $150,000 with his French club. He declined offers from brands such as Coca-Cola. Jeremy Medjana, co-founder of Agence Comsport, highlighted Wembanyama’s stance, noting, “They all want him, but Victor will never sell soda. Because he doesn’t want to kill the kids.”
At just 22 years old, Wembanyama is already amassing stories that captivate fans. If the Spurs win the Finals, his status could reach levels not seen since a young LeBron James. The Knicks have not been in the Finals since 1999 and have not won the championship since 1973, while San Antonio aims for its first title since 2014.
