Many musicians often incorporate their personal experiences into their work, and Olivia Rodrigo is no exception. Her latest album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” reflects her own journey in navigating adult relationships. The pop star shared that her personal experiences as an adult in a complex relationship have influenced the album’s creation.
In a conversation with Dazed magazine, Olivia expressed how the album portrays her initial exploration of romantic love in adulthood. “This record is about my first time being in an adult relationship,” she explained. “It’s me discovering what romantic love looks like in real time. I’ve been in relationships before that were really exciting and tumultuous in a teenage way, but this was my first time being in a real, ‘big girl’ relationship.”
She further discussed how being involved in a relationship enhances self-awareness. “When you’re in an intimate relationship, it holds up a mirror and shows you parts of yourself that you would never normally see,” Olivia stated. “That was an endless source of inspiration – something that I’m still mining.”
As for whether fans will glean insights into her current relationship from the album, Olivia mentioned that the songs aim to be universally relatable, covering various stages of relationships. “There’s a song for someone who’s going through any stage of a relationship,” she remarked. “I mean, I never talk about my personal life in interviews or on any public forum, so I guess the music is where people would go to deduce things. But, you know, it’s just a song at the end of the day.”
The album “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love” is set to be released by Geffen Records on June 12.
