The New York Knicks’ winning streak came to an end as the San Antonio Spurs emerged victorious in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. The Spurs secured a 115-111 victory at Madison Square Garden, reducing their series deficit to 2-1. The game was attended by President Trump, alongside celebrities and fans who paid substantial sums for tickets.
The Spurs, initially leading by 12 points in the first half, saw their advantage slip before halftime. They eventually trailed the Knicks by seven points. The Knicks’ role players, including OG Anunoby and Josh Hart, kept the team competitive despite a slow shooting start by star guard Jalen Brunson. Victor Wembanyama’s outstanding performance helped the Spurs maintain a slight lead in the fourth quarter, preventing a sweep.
Wembanyama’s contributions were significant as the Spurs attempt a historic comeback; no team has ever overcome an initial 2-0 deficit in the Finals at home to win the championship. New York was hosting its first NBA Finals game since 1999, ending a 13-game postseason winning streak, the second-longest in playoff history.
Wembanyama recorded 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists with just one turnover. His performance placed him as the second-youngest player after Magic Johnson to achieve at least 30 points, five rebounds, and five assists in the Finals. Stephon Castle added 23 points, and rookie Dylan Harper contributed 13 points.
“Less mistakes, more control,” Wembanyama said during the ABC broadcast.
Jalen Brunson scored 32 points on 25 shots, and Anunoby added 28 points for the Knicks in their first Finals game since 1999. Before the game, fans faced long lines to enter the arena due to heightened security for President Trump’s attendance, which led to several street closures around the Garden. Watch parties were held across all five boroughs.
Despite a slow start, the Spurs delivered 10 more assists than New York, committed five fewer turnovers, and achieved 10 more free throws. With 1:53 left in the fourth quarter, Castle’s 3-pointer pushed them ahead 111-104, responding to the pressure of a crowd anticipating a Knicks victory.
In the final minute, despite Brunson’s impressive step-back 3-pointer narrowing the gap, De’Aaron Fox’s skillful 12-foot jumper helped secure the Spurs’ lead. Even as Anunoby made a desperate 3-pointer with six seconds remaining, Castle’s two free throws sealed the win.
Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday.
Individual Performances and Game Dynamics
Throughout the series, Brunson struggled with foul trouble, restricting him to bench time, as Wembanyama played a leadership role on the court. San Antonio’s free throw performance showed varying success, bringing attention to potential effects in close games.
The game featured high-profile attendees including Adrien Brody, Alex Rodriguez, Cardi B, among others, showcasing the widespread interest and excitement surrounding the Finals.
Knicks’ resilience was remarkable, evidenced by key contributions from players like OG Anunoby, who delivered 17 points in the game’s critical moments alongside Josh Hart.
Looking to Game 4, the Spurs must continue capitalizing on their tactical play and leveraging young talent like Castle and Wembanyama for sustained success against the Knicks.
