The race for governor in Oklahoma is experiencing new developments after President Donald Trump recently endorsed Mike Mazzei. Mazzei, a former state senator and budget secretary, appears to be gaining traction among Republican primary voters. According to a recent survey conducted by JMC Analytics and Polling, Trump’s endorsement may be influencing voter preferences.
The poll, conducted 12 days before the primary election, shows Mazzei with 24% support among likely Republican voters. Attorney General Gentner Drummond follows closely with 20%. Other candidates include former State Senator Jake Merrick at 12%, former Secretary of Public Safety Chip Keating at 10%, and Charles McCall, the former Oklahoma Speaker of the House, at 7%. Additionally, some candidates received under 3%, while 25% of voters remain undecided. Mazzei and Drummond are in a statistical tie due to the poll’s margin of error.
Mazzei attributed his endorsement from Trump to shared conservative policy goals. ‘We earned Donald Trump’s endorsement because our conservative policy goals are aligned with his,’ Mazzei stated. ‘Our campaign aims to lower taxes, eliminate government fraud, and boost the economy.’
The survey further reveals that among undecided voters, 11% are leaning towards Mazzei, 6% towards Keating, 5% towards Drummond, and 3% towards Merrick or McCall. Despite Trump’s influence, 68% still remain undecided. This poll surveyed 550 likely Republican voters on June 2 and June 3 and has a margin of error of 4.18%.
Trump’s endorsements have a history of impacting elections, often consolidating votes for candidates who align with his platform. However, Trump’s endorsed candidate Representative Randy Feenstra conceded his race for Iowa governor, showing that Trump’s influence is not absolute.
When asked about the most pressing issue in the country, 30% of respondents indicated inflation and the cost of living, while 23% mentioned border security and illegal immigration.
Trump praised Mazzei’s alignment with his policies in his endorsement. ‘Mike knows the AMERICA FIRST Policies required to grow our economy, create jobs, cut taxes, and promote MADE IN THE U.S.A.,’ Trump stated. He expressed confidence in Mazzei’s commitment to securing borders and supporting farmers and veterans.
Other polls present mixed results. A NonDoc poll from late May signals a close race, with Mazzei at 22.1%, Drummond at 21.66%, and Keating at 21.44%. Meanwhile, McCall attained 18.38% in the same survey, conducted among 457 Republican voters with a 4.6% margin of error.
In a striking contrast, a Cole Hargrave Snodgrass & Associates poll from January presented Drummond leading at 36% compared to McCall at 14%, with Keating and Mazzei each at 13% and Merrick at 5%. This survey involved 600 likely Republican voters, reflecting a margin of error of 4.3%.
A separate poll from October by co/efficient showed McCall ahead with 31%, followed by Drummond at 20%, and Mazzei at 1%. Keating captured 5%, Merrick 3%, while 38% were undecided.
