Mount Carmel’s Cullen Winters Aims for Dual Titles

Cullen Winters, a standout at Mount Carmel, has his sights set on clinching two championship titles during his junior year. Having been a crucial defensive player in football, his efforts contributed significantly to the Caravan’s triumph in the Class 8A title last fall. Now, Winters’ performance on the baseball field is driving the team closer to another championship.

“Winning in two sports in one year would be special,” Winters expressed. “The experience from football helps, and we aim to achieve the same in baseball.” His determination was on full display as he drove in the go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, securing a 6-3 win over Sandburg at the Class 4A Crestwood Supersectional, held at Ozinga Field.

Winters’ teammates also played pivotal roles. Triton commit Logan Fernandez delivered a two-run double, while Georgetown recruit Brady Holland contributed a double, a run, and an RBI. Cowley commit Jonathan Osornio added an important pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth.

During the game, Winters showcased his versatility by scoring once more. He executed a run-saving throw from left field to maintain the team’s lead. The match concluded with Mount Carmel’s victory, propelling them to a state semifinal bout at Slammers Stadium in Joliet.

In the previous inning, Lewis recruit Jake Matise managed to escape a bases-loaded scenario to extend the game. “I knew I had to get us out of that jam,” Matise shared. “I just focused on getting it over the plate.” His efforts set the stage for Winters’ decisive hit.

Sandburg, with contributors like Roosevelt recruit Giovanni Longo, briefly tied the game with a two-run homer. Despite their efforts, they fell short of advancing.

Winters demonstrated impressive performance throughout the postseason, going 5-for-9 with three RBIs in prior games. “This playoff run, Cullen’s been clutch,” Matise noted, highlighting Winters’ important catches and hits.

Mount Carmel coach Brian Hurry expressed enthusiasm for Winters’ dual-sport success. “Cullen is a fierce competitor,” Hurry commented. “Watching him in football, I knew he had the mindset for baseball.” Winters’ postseason successes underscore this prediction.

With the championship insight, Winters aims to maintain his momentum. “I did some extra hitting and got my confidence up,” Winters recalled. “Now, I’ve got to keep it going.”
