The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This tournament is historic, featuring 104 matches over 39 days and increasing the team count to 48. It commences on June 11 and concludes on July 19. FIFA president Gianni Infantino described it as “104 Super Bowls,” highlighting its scale and significance.
On a recent episode of “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, former USMNT defender Alexi Lalas emphasized the need for higher expectations from the American team. “We should expect more from this U.S. team than we ever have in the past,” Lalas stated. He pointed out that this current generation of players has been well-supported from a young age, warranting higher expectations. He advised, “America, you should expect your team to win this group.”
In Group D, Team USA is top-seeded and matches up against Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey. Their first game is against Paraguay on June 12 at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California. Tim Ream captains the team, with Christian Pulisic leading the pack with 84 caps and 32 goals. This squad includes 13 players returning from the 2022 World Cup and 13 new players, making it the fifth-youngest American team in World Cup history.
Analysts believe Team USA should lead Group D. Turkey poses the toughest challenge, having defeated the U.S. in a friendly last year. However, the Americans are favored in all three group matches. If they win their group, they will enter the new Round of 32, a situation favorable to the U.S. team as noted by Lalas, being unprecedented in American men’s World Cup history.
Progressing past that stage, they would advance to the Round of 16, where strong home support and favorable conditions could help them make a significant impact. This scenario is vital given the U.S. team’s past record of three group stage exits in five World Cups. With a youthful roster and home advantage, every obstacle that previously hindered the team seems removed, leaving their success largely dependent on their performance.
