Nevada Gubernatorial Election: Ford vs. Lombardo

3 weeks ago 0

RENO, Nev. — The Nevada race for governor is drawing significant attention as Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford prepares to challenge Republican incumbent Gov. Joe Lombardo this November. This high-stakes election could become a focal point in national politics.

The Associated Press has reported that Nevada Democrats have nominated Aaron Ford, who has twice served as state Attorney General, to oppose Gov. Joe Lombardo. Ford secured his party’s nomination by defeating five other Democratic contenders. His campaign has emphasized failures in addressing rising costs of groceries, gas, housing, and healthcare under Lombardo’s governance. Ford also highlights Gov. Lombardo’s connection to former President Trump, whose endorsement comes amidst declining popularity since winning Nevada by three points in the previous election.

Gov. Joe Lombardo emerged victorious against six primary opponents, buoyed by his legislative achievements despite Democratic control of both chambers in the state legislature. Lombardo’s accomplishments include a bipartisan school accountability bill, criminal justice reforms following George Floyd’s killing, and efforts to improve housing availability. He also played a role in securing public financing for a Major League Baseball stadium for the A’s, relocated from Oakland.

Lombardo enters the general election with a substantial campaign fund, yet financial resources alone do not guarantee success in Nevada. Effective messaging and voter outreach are critical, areas where Ford could have an edge. The influential Culinary Union, representing hospitality workers in Nevada, has endorsed Ford. This organization, claiming up to 60,000 members in the state, serves as a key voter mobilization force, with polling sites integrated into casinos and resorts catering to hospitality employees.
