President Donald Trump faced criticism during a review of the Sports Broadcasting Act. Lawmakers condemned the NFL for streaming games exclusively, costing some fans up to $1,000 to watch their favorite teams. Amidst this, a Democratic representative took an unrelated jab at Trump following his attendance at an NBA Finals game.
During Game 3 of the NBA Finals, Trump watched the New York Knicks against the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8, 2026. He was the first sitting president to attend the NBA Finals. The Knicks had won the first two games but lost when they returned home.
Despite the hearing primarily addressing NFL-related streaming costs, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., blamed Trump for the Knicks’ performance. Nadler remarked about the Knicks’ championship aspirations, suggesting they would perform better as long as Trump stayed away from the game. “Let’s go Knicks,” he encouraged.
Trump received a mix of reactions from the Madison Square Garden audience, contrasting with his reception at a college football national championship in Florida. Security in New York was heightened due to his presence. This included installing a fence around the arena and increased law enforcement activities, causing longer entry waits. Watch parties were canceled for security reasons related to Trump’s visit but were expected to resume for Game 4.
The president has attended numerous sports events since his second term, including the Super Bowl in New Orleans and the Daytona 500. His attendance has been notable, reflecting his interest in sports.
