A 30-year-old woman suffered significant injuries after a shark attack at Sydney’s Coogee Beach on Saturday. This incident adds to a series of recent shark attacks across Australia’s coast.
Emergency services arrived at Coogee Beach following reports of a swimmer being bitten. The woman received initial first aid from beachgoers before being airlifted to the hospital. Authorities reported injuries to her arm and leg.
Due to this attack, Coogee Beach and nearby beaches were temporarily closed. This event occurs amidst a series of deadly shark encounters in the region.
Last week, a 35-year-old fisherman was killed by a suspected shark near Albany, Western Australia. Earlier in May, Michael Jensz, 39, lost his life during a suspected bull shark attack at the Great Barrier Reef. On May 16, Steve Mattabonni, 38, was fatally attacked by a supposed great white shark near Rottnest Island.
In addition, a 12-year-old boy died earlier this year after a shark attack in Sydney Harbour. In January, heavy rain and resulting murky waters coincided with four shark attacks along Australia’s east coast, leading to temporary beach closures.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare tracks shark attacks, noting an average of 20 per year. The recent spike in incidents has raised concerns regarding beach safety.
