Roblox is dedicated to creating a safe and age-appropriate environment for its users. A spokesperson from Roblox explained to NBC News that claims against the platform often misunderstand its operations and overlook the significant safety measures it has implemented.
Roblox’s age verification processes have drawn some controversy. These measures, involving a third-party vendor called Persona, aim to ensure privacy by deleting biometric data immediately after use. However, inaccuracies in age estimations and user attempts to bypass the system have raised concerns.
Age estimation tools have become crucial as social platforms face criticism for failing to protect children. Despite this, digital rights and free speech advocates worry about potential new risks to user privacy. Jacobs, a representative from Roblox, stated that AI technology used by the platform estimates ages based on facial structure within an accuracy of 1.4 years. This method is more precise than self-declared age methods.
Roblox offers solutions for users who dispute their estimated ages. For instance, users can provide government-issued IDs to correct discrepancies. Parents can also manually adjust ages on linked accounts. Roblox employs continuous age estimation to monitor and verify discrepancies in user behavior and account ages.
Despite acknowledging that the system may not always be perfect, Jacobs emphasized the importance of balancing error correction with preventing system abuse. Krista Carroll, a parent, expressed relief that Roblox takes safety seriously and hopes other companies will adopt similar practices.
However, Roblox’s changes in content policies have affected its developer community. With more than 24,500 developers, many being independent hobbyists, Roblox introduced new requirements. These include ID verification, two-factor authentication, and a financial deposit to publish games for users under 16.
These adjustments have sparked criticism from smaller developers unable to afford the costs. Jacobs explained that these measures ensure developers are invested in maintaining the platform’s integrity. She added that games must go through a review process to ensure compliance with safety policies.
Roblox seeks community input through its Community Safety Council, comprising creators advising on safety initiatives. Although changes can be controversial, Jacobs stated that Roblox’s ongoing commitment to safety remains steadfast, even if it displeases some users.
